Bilberry

Bilberry is any of several species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium (family Ericaceae), bearing edible berries. The species most often referred to is Vaccinium myrtillus L., but there are several other closely related species.

Bilberry has a traditional use in eye problems, including poor vision, and 'night blindness' (the inability to differentiate between objects and colours in poor light). Night blindness, which is related to the absence of visual purple (rhodopsin), is materially improved by the powerful phytochemical antioxidant compounds such as proanthocyanidins and other polyphenolic bioflavonoids.

• May assist capillary and circulatory health
• Assists in maintaining healthy eye function
• May play a role in assisting visual perception, particularly at night
• Bilberry may also be useful in aiding fine detail work and glare sensitivity
• Bilberry is a rich source of antioxidants, assisting in decreasing the risk of cell damage attributed to free radicals
• Free radicals have been implicated in the development and progression of cataracts and other eye conditions
